Historic Northland Cruise

Location: Northland

Activity Code: RTTM102

Overview

Overview

A unique voyage on the ship from NZ Historic Places Trust, has been charted for you to rediscover the first encounters between people, land and sea. Starting with the first Maori settlers then early Europeans arrivals, Maori and Europeans learned, sometimes with tragic consequences, about each others cultures and environment.

Over the seventy years from 1769, when James Cook first weighed anchor in the Bay of Islands, these encounters, events and exchanges culminated in the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and, with it, the founding of our nation.

This historic cruise provides you with the rare opportunity of exploring our coastal waters, so rich in history, from the kind of sailing ship that was so familiar here in the 19 th century. Like the early mariners, you will view and experience our shores from the sea. You will learn about significant encounters that took place, especially those between local tribes and early European visitors. Some events led to bloodshed and tragedy through misunderstandings between cultures; others led to working relationships and lasting friendships between the different races.

Sailing aboard Northland's own tall ship, our voyage of discovery will take you from the Bay of Islands , via the Cavallis to the spectacular and remote Whangaroa Harbour. A guest historian will share our fascinating stories as we make our way up the coast. At sheltered (chosen subject to weather) anchorages we will stop to go ashore and explore further. Returning to the Bay, our final port of call will be Waitangi, the place where New Zealand 's founding document was signed.

The trips, now in their third year have received rave reviews so don't miss out.
